British family doctors criticise change of plan on vaccine boosters - WHTC News

LONDON (Reuters) - British doctors have said a government decision to delay giving a coronavirus vaccine booster shot to vulnerable patients who have already had a first dose will be distressing and disruptive, their trade union said on Thursday.

The government said on Wednesday it wanted to give a first dose to as many people as possible before starting to administer boosters at 12 weeks, in an effort to provide more people with a degree of protection more quickly.

But Dr Richard Vautrey, chair of the British Medical Association (BMA) committee for local family doctors, said it was "grossly and patently unfair to tens of thousands of our most at-risk patients to now try to reschedule their appointments".

For the newly approved vaccine developed by Oxford University and made by AstraZeneca being rolled out in Britain next week, the plan is consistent with a finding that waiting 12 weeks maximises protection against the virus.

But in the case of the Pfizer/BioNTech shot that is already being given, the manufacturer said the shot had not been evaluated on dosing schedules different from the recommended 21 days.

The BMA said scores of doctors had told it that the new approach would distress vulnerable patients and create logistical problems for healthcare staff.

"The BMA believes these are patients that have already been promised ... that they will receive a second dose of Pfizer vaccination next week; they have given their consent to receive it and, quite rightly, are expecting to have it," the BMA said.

More than 616,000 people had been given the Pfizer vaccine by Dec. 20, and the first follow-up injections were given this week, at an interval of 21 days.

The BMA said it would support any doctors who decided to honour existing booster appointments, and urged the government to provide a "scientifically validated justification" for its new approach.

After the British government's announcement on Wednesday, Pfizer said it had no data to demonstrate that protection after the first dose was sustained after 21 days.

A spokeswoman for the National Health Service said the new guidance would "increase the number of vulnerable people protected against COVID over the next three months, potentially saving thousands of lives".

She said financial and practical help was being provided to help accelerate vaccinations.

3 Big Dividend Stocks Yielding Over 7%; Raymond James Says ‘Buy’

Wall Street’s investment firms are burning the midnight oil as we approach the end of 2020, publishing their year-end notes and their New Year prognostications, both for investors’ edification. There is the obvious point: we’re in a moment of rising markets, and investor sentiment is riding high now that the election is settled and COVID vaccines have emergency approval and are getting into the distribution networks. However, the lockdown policies put in place to combat the virus this winter are slowing down the economic recovery. Whether the economy will truly tank or not is yet to be seen.In the meantime, Raymond James strategist Tavis McCourt has published his take on the current situation, and his comments bear consideration. First, McCourt notes the investors are focused on the good news: “[The] equity market is more focused on vaccine deployment and complete re-openings of economies in 2021, and so far, negative data points have been largely brushed aside.”Looking ahead, McCourt writes of the next two years: “We believe the logical outcome of 2021 (and 2022 for that matter) is a likely "return to normalcy" with strong EPS growth offset by lower P/Es barring a change in the vaccine story. We expect cyclical sectors and smaller cap equities to continue to outperform, as is typical in early cycle markets…”The research analysts at Raymond James have been searching the markets for the ‘right’ buys, and their picks bear a closer look. They’ve been tapping high-yielding dividend payers as an investment play of choice. The TipRanks database sheds some additional light on three of JMP’s picks – stocks with dividends yielding 7% or better – and that the investment firm sees with 10% upside or better.New Residential Investment (NRZ)The real estate investment trust (REIT) segment has long been known for its high and reliable dividends, a feature promoted by tax regulations which stipulate that these companies must return a certain proportion of profits directly to investors. Based in New York City, New Residential Investment is typical of its sector. The company’s portfolio includes residential mortgages, mortgage loan servicing rights, and loan origination. NRZ focuses its operations on the residential housing sector.NRZ is a mid-cap company, with a market value of $4.13 billion and a portfolio worth $5.72 billion. The company’s revenues have been rising since the second quarter of 2020, after steep losses during the ‘corona recession’ of Q1. The third quarter earnings, however, came in at 19 cents per share, down from 54 cents in the year-ago quarter. But even with that loss, NRZ took care to maintain the dividend. In fact, it did more than that. The company raised the Q3 dividend, to 15 cents per common share, in a continuation of an interesting story. Back in Q1, the company pared back the common share dividend to 5 cents, in a move to preserve capital during the corona crisis. The company has since raised the dividend by 5 cents in each subsequent quarter, and the Q4 payment, announced in mid-December, is for 20 cents per common share. At that rate, the dividend annualizes to 80 cents and the yield exceeds 7.87%.In addition to raising the dividend, NRZ has also announced a share buyback program totaling $100 million. The repurchase is for preferred stock shares, and goes alongside the existing repurchase policy of common shares.Analyst Stephen Laws, in his coverage of NRZ for Raymond James, writes, “We expect strong origination volumes and attractive gain on sale margins to drive strong near-term results, and we continue to expect a dividend increase in 4Q [...] For 4Q20, we are increasing our core earnings estimate by $0.02 per share to $0.35 per share. For 2021, we are increasing our core earnings estimate by $0.08 per share to $1.31 per share."In line with these comments, Laws rates the stock an Outperform (i.e. Buy). His $11.50 target price implies a one-year upside of 16%. (To watch Laws’ track record, click here)It’s not often that the analysts all agree on a stock, so when it does happen, take note. NRZ’s Strong Buy consensus rating is based on a unanimous 8 Buys. The stock’s $11.36 average price target suggests a 14% and a change from the current share price of $9.93. (See NRZ stock analysis on TipRanks)Fidus Investment Corporation (FDUS)Next up is a business development corporation, Fidus Investment. This company is one of many in the mid-market business financing niche, offering debt solutions and capital access to smaller firms that may not be able to secure lending from the larger markets. Fidus’ portfolio focuses on senior secured debt and mezzanine debt for companies valued between $10 million and $150 million.Fidus has investments in 68 companies with an aggregate value of $697 million. The largest portion of that portfolio, 59%, is second-lien debt, with the rest divided mainly between subordinated debt, first-lien debt, and equity-related securities. The company has seen revenues gain through the second and third quarters of 2020, after negative results in Q1. The third quarter top line came in at ~$21 million, up an impressive 129% sequentially. Since the third quarter, Fidus has declared its dividend for Q4, at 30 cents per common share, the same as the previous two quarter, plus an extra 4-cent special dividend authorized by the Board of Directors. This brings the total payment for the quarter to 34 cents per common share, and puts the yield at 9.5%.Raymond James analyst Robert Dodd likes what he sees in Fidus, especially the dividend prospects. “We continue to see the risk / reward as attractive at current levels - with shares trading below book, solid forecasted base dividend coverage from NII… We project FDUS solidly over-earning its quarterly base dividend of $0.30 / share through our projection period. As a result, we do project modest supplementals…”Dodd puts an Outperform (i.e. Buy) rating on the stock, and sets a target price of $14. At current levels, that target indicates an upside of 10.5% in the next months. (To watch Dodd’s track record, click here)Wall Street is somewhat more divided on FDUS shares, a circumstance reflected in the Moderate Buy analyst consensus rating. That rating is based on 4 reviews, including 2 Buys and 2 Holds. Shares are priced at $12.66, and the $13.33 average price target suggests a modest 5% upside from current levels. (See FDUS stock analysis on TipRanks)TPG RE Finance Trust (TRTX)Returning to the REIT sector, we look at TPG RE Finance Trust, the real estate financing arm of global asset firm TPG. This REIT, with an $820 million market cap, has built a portfolio of commercial mortgage loans worth an aggregate total of $5.5 billion. The company is a provider for original commercial mortgage loans starting at $50 million, mainly in US primary markets. The largest share of the company’s loans and properties are centered in the East.Like many finance companies, TPG RE Finance saw serious losses in Q1 due to the corona pandemic crisis – but has since recovered to a large extent. Revenues in Q3 hit $48 million, up 9% year-over-year. During the quarter, TPG received loan repayments totaling $199.6 million, a solid result, and when the quarter ended the company had on hand $225.6 million in cash or cash equivalents. The company was able to easily fund its dividend, of 20 cents per common share, in Q3. For Q4, the company has recently declared not just the 20-cent regular payment, but also an 18-cent non-recurring special cash dividend. Taken together, the dividends give a yield of 7.5%, almost 4x higher than the average found among S&P-listed companies.Returning to Raymond James’ REIT expert Stephen Laws, we find that he is bullish on TRTX, too. “TRTX has underperformed since reporting 3Q results, which we believe creates an attractive buying opportunity… We expect core earnings to continue benefiting from LIBOR floors in loans and expect new investments to resume in 1Q21. The company's portfolio has combined retail and hotel exposure of 14%, which is below the sector average of 19%...” To this end, Laws rates TRTX a Strong Buy and his $13 price target suggests ~22% upside in 2021. (To watch Laws’ track record, click here)This stock also holds a Strong Buy rating from the analyst consensus, based on 3 unanimous Buy reviews set in recent weeks. Shares are priced at $10.67 and the average target of $11.00 suggests a modest 3% upside from current levels. SpaceX outlines plan to catch Falcon Super Heavy booster for reuse - SlashGear

One way SpaceX works to make placing satellites and other objects into orbit cheaper is by landing and reusing its Falcon 9 booster rockets. It has a long history of successfully landing the first stage boosters, both on land and on drone ships in the ocean. SpaceX is now outlining its plan to capture and reuse the Falcon Super Heavy booster that will be used to push Starship and larger payloads into space.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk recently revealed plans that are different from how the Falcon 9 booster is captured. Musk says Super Heavy will be captured by the launch tower arm. Musk said that the grid fins would take the load at the point of capture by the launch tower.

The company CEO announced the plans after someone on Twitter tweeted at him if an animated video was an accurate Super Heavy descent profile. SpaceX certainly wants to reuse the Super Heavy boosters to save money, but Musk also says that by using the launch tower arm, they could eliminate the need for the booster to have legs for landing.

The technique would also allow the booster to be immediately repositioned onto the launch mount for reuse. Musk says this technique would allow the Super Heavy booster to be ready to refly in less than an hour. That would be an impressive feat as it’s typically significantly longer for SpaceX to refit Falcon 9 boosters.

SpaceX ran into a problem with its last Starship test when the rocket exploded after a hard landing. The company is preparing to test two prototype Super Heavy boosters in the coming months at its launch facility in Texas. It will be interesting to see more detail on how SpaceX plans to land its massive rocket with such precision.

Some U.K. doctors plan to defy instructions to wait longer on vaccine booster shots. - The New York Times

Some family doctors in Britain said on Thursday that they would defy the government’s instructions to postpone patients’ appointments for a second dose of coronavirus vaccine, a signal of unease in the medical community over Britain’s new plan to delay second shots as a way of giving more people the partial protection of a single dose.

British doctors, who have been instructed to begin rescheduling second-dose appointments that had been set for next week, said they were loath to ask older, vulnerable patients to wait an extra two months for their booster shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. They said those patients had been counting on having the full protection of two doses, had already arranged for caregivers to help them get to their doctors’ offices, and could ill afford to rely on a new and untested vaccination strategy.

Beyond that, doctors said, it was logistically impossible to make contact with thousands of older patients in a matter of days, and then fill those slots with first-time recipients.

The British Medical Association, a trade union for doctors, said on Thursday that it would support doctors who decided to keep second-dose appointments that have been booked for January.

“It is grossly and patently unfair to tens of thousands of our most at-risk patients to now try to reschedule their appointments,” Dr. Richard Vautrey, the chairman of the trade union’s family doctor committee, said in a statement. “The government must see that it’s only right that existing bookings for the oldest and most vulnerable members of our society are honored, and it must also as soon as possible publish a scientifically validated justification for its new approach.”

A spokeswoman for Britain’s National Health Service said in a statement that the service was giving family doctors “extra financial and logistical support” in order to “to help ensure thousands more receive the vaccine quickly.”

“The N.H.S. has to follow” the new guidance, the statement said, “so as to increase the number of vulnerable people protected against Covid over the next three months, potentially saving thousands of lives.”

Delaying second vaccine doses could double the number of people who receive a shot soon, and eventually lighten the toll of the virus in Britain, where hospitals are facing a deluge of cases of a new and more contagious coronavirus variant. While any one person may be better off getting the second dose promptly, some scientists said, society as a whole benefits if more people are given the partial protection of a single dose for the time being.

Other scientists, however, believe that Britain overshot the available evidence, potentially leaving older people and health care workers without the full protection of two vaccine doses amid dreadful wintertime surges. Britain made the decision without the public meetings or voluminous briefings that have preceded American regulatory decisions. No trials have explicitly tested the long-term efficacy of a single shot.

And what limited evidence exists about the protection afforded by a single dose clashed with scientists’ fears that antibody responses would wane over time, potentially falling below a protective threshold.

Some family doctors in Britain said that they were uneasy about a lack of evidence showing that patients would be protected for many weeks from Covid-19 after a single shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

“I have been instructed to break my promise to my elderly patients,” Dr. Helen Salisbury, a family doctor in Oxford, said on Twitter on Thursday morning, “and use a vaccine outside its evidenced and approved schedule, probably placing them at risk.”

Elon Musk says SpaceX will attempt to recover Super Heavy rocket by catching it with launch tower - TechCrunch

SpaceX will try a significantly different approach to landing its future reusable rocket boosters, according to CEO and founder Elon Musk. It will attempt to ‘catch’ the heavy booster, which is currently in development, using the launch tower arm used to stabilize the vehicle during its pre-takeoff preparations. Current Falcon 9 boosters return to Earth and land propulsively on their own built-in legs – but the goal with Super Heavy is for the larger rocket not to have legs at all, says Musk.

The Super Heavy launch process will still involve use of its engines to control the velocity of its descent, but it will involve using the grid fins that are included on its main body to help control its orientation during flight to ‘catch’ the booster – essentially hooking it using the launch tower arm before it touches the ground at all. The main benefits of this method, which will obviously involve a lot of precision maneuvering, is that it means SpaceX can save both cost and weight by omitting landing legs from the Super Heavy design altogether.

Another potential benefit raised by Musk is that it could allow SpaceX to essentially recycle the Super Heavy booster immediately back on the launch mount it returns to – possibly enabling it to be ready to fly again with a new payload and upper stage (consisting of Starship, the other spacecraft SpaceX is currently developing and testing) in “under an hour.”

The goal for Starship and Super Heavy is to create a launch vehicle that’s even more reusable than SpaceX’s current Falcon 9 (and Falcon Heavy) system. Eventually, the goal for Musk is to have Starship making regular and frequent flights – for point-to-point flight on Earth, for orbital missions closer to home, and for long-distance runs to the Moon and Mars. The pace at which he envisions these happening in order to make it possible to colonize Mars with a continuous human population requires the kind of rapid recycling and reflying of Super Heavy he described today with this proposed new landing method.

Starship prototypes are currently being constructed and tested in Boca Chica, Texas, where SpaceX has been flying the pre-production spaceship during the past year. The company is also working on elements of the Super Heavy booster, and Musk said recently that it intends to begin actively flight-testing that component of the launch system in a few months’ time.

How Do Car Seats Fit in a 2021 Lincoln Aviator? - Cars.com

2020 Lincoln Aviator

Cars.com photo by Mike Hanley

Editor’s note: This Car Seat Check was written in October 2020 about the 2020 Lincoln Aviator. Little of substance has changed with this year’s model. See what’s new for 2021 or see the models compared.

The verdict: Lincoln’s Aviator sits below the full-size Navigator in the automaker’s lineup. This three-row SUV had ample room for two car seats in its second row when we tested it, though we were left wanting for third-row legroom. For this car seat check, we tested a high-end Reserve trim with second-row bucket seats.

Does it fit three car seats? No.

Take a look at how the Latch system and each car seat scored below in our Car Seat Check of the 2020 Lincoln Aviator.

Cars.com graphic

 A Grade

  • Latch, third row: In the third row, there are two sets of lower anchors; they’re exposed for easy access and connection. There are two top tether anchors on the seatback that are clearly marked and easy to use.

B Grade

  • Latch, second row: The two sets of anchors sit in pockets in the leather upholstery, which must be opened to expose them. This isn’t difficult, but it’s an extra step. Two clearly marked top tether anchors sit on the seatback.
  • Infant: Installation was OK and our 5-foot, 6-inch front passenger had ample legroom after the infant seat was installed.
  • Rear-facing convertible: Again, installation was fine and there were no room issues.
  • Forward-facing convertible: There was no need to raise the head restraint. Connection was again OK — once we fumbled through the upholstery pocket to expose the Latch anchors. Connecting to the top tether anchor was easy.
  • Booster: Again, there was no need to raise the head restraint to ensure the booster sits flush against the seatback. The buckles are floppy, which may make them hard for kids to grasp, but they can be routed through a strap in the leather so they don’t flop behind the booster.
  • Forward-facing convertible, third row: The fixed head restraint is skinny, so it doesn’t interfere with fit. Connecting to the lower anchors and top tether anchor was easy. There’s not a lot of third-row legroom, however. If people in the second row are tall and have the seats set all the way back, there’s not enough third-row legroom.
  • Booster, third row: Again, the fixed head restraint is small enough so as to not interfere with the booster sitting flat against the seatback. The third row’s stable buckles should be easy for kids to grasp and use. There’s not a lot of third-row legroom, however. If people in the second row are tall and have the seats set all the way back, legroom will be a problem in the third row.

C Grade

  • Third-row access: There’s a big storage console between the second-row captain’s chairs, which makes it tough to access the third row. There’s a button on the captain’s chair seatback that slides the seat forward to open access to the third row, but that won’t work with car seats installed and the opening is small. The step-in height is also pretty tall.

Grading Scale

A: Plenty of room for the car seat and the child; doesn’t impact driver or front passenger legroom. Easy to find and connect to Latch and tether anchors. No fit issues involving head restraint or seat contouring. Easy access to the third row.

B: One room, fit or connection issue. Some problems accessing the third row when available.

C: Marginal room plus one fit or connection issue. Difficult to access the third row when available.

D: Insufficient room, plus multiple fit or connection issues.

F: Does not fit or is unsafe.

About Cars.com’s Car Seat Checks

Editors Jennifer Geiger and Jennifer Newman are certified child safety seat installation technicians.

For the Car Seat Check, we use a Chicco KeyFit 30 infant-safety seat, a Graco Contender 65 convertible seat and Graco TurboBooster seat. The front seats are adjusted for a 6-foot driver and a shorter passenger. The three child seats are installed in the second row. The booster seat sits behind the driver’s seat, and the infant and convertible seats are installed behind the front passenger seat.

We also install the forward-facing convertible in the second row’s middle seat with the booster and infant seat in the outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit; a child sitting in the booster seat must be able to reach the seat belt buckle. If there’s a third row, we install the booster seat and a forward-facing convertible. Learn more about how we conduct our Car Seat Checks.

Parents should also remember that they can use the Latch system or a seat belt to install a car seat, and that Latch anchors have a weight limit of 65 pounds, including the weight of the child and the weight of the seat itself.

Fired Tyson manager defends COVID-19 bets as morale booster - CBS News

One of seven Tyson Foods managers fired for betting on how many workers would test positive for COVID-19 at an Iowa pork plant is defending the office pool as spontaneous fun that was meant to boost morale.

Don Merschbrock, a former night manager at the pork processing plant in Waterloo, Iowa, said he was speaking out in an attempt to show he and his six former colleagues are "not the evil people" that Tyson has portrayed.

"We really want to clear our names," he told The Associated Press. "We actually worked very hard and took care of our team members well." Mershbrock and six other managers were fired by Tyson nearly two weeks ago.

Tyson announced the terminations of the Waterloo managers on December 16, weeks after the betting claims surfaced in wrongful death lawsuits filed by the families of four workers who died of COVID-19.

The Springdale, Arkansas-based company said an investigation led by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder found sufficient evidence to terminate those involved, calling their actions in violation of Tyson's values. The company had asked Holder's law firm to conduct its probe as a public backlash threatened to damage its brand and demoralize its workers.

Tyson, one of the world's largest meat producers, did not release Holder's findings, and fired managers have complained that they were given no explanation.

Merschbrock released a statement and spoke to reporters, explaining that he was freer to speak as he isn't named as a defendant in the lawsuits.

He said managers conducted the office pool last spring within minutes following mass testing of the plant's roughly 2,800 workers.

County officials said last May that more than 1,000 workers tested positive for the virus, which hospitalized several and killed at least six. They criticized Tyson for not initially providing workers adequate protective gear and for idling the plant only after the outbreak had torn through the area.

Lawyers for the estates of four dead workers cast the office betting pool as illustrating Tyson's disregard for the health and safety of its workers. They're alleging plant managers downplayed the severity of the virus, and at times let or encouraged workers to show up even when sick.

One suit filed earlier this month accused the company of discouraging interpreters from discussing the virus, other than to falsely claim that it was not a problem at the facility. A Tyson spokesperson declined to comment on that suit at the time.

Tyson has said the plant — its largest for pork and able to process 20,000 hogs daily — was designated as critical infrastructure by the federal government in March, and that its leaders worked to "safely continue operations to secure the national food supply."

U.S. District Judge Linda Reade on Monday ordered the wrongful death lawsuits back to Iowa state court, rejecting the company's request to change the jurisdiction. She said Tyson failed to show it was acting under the direction of federal authorities.

"No federal officer directed Tyson to keep its Waterloo facility open in a negligent manner ... or make fraudulent misrepresentations to employees at the Waterloo facility regarding the risks or severity of the coronavirus pandemic and COVID-19 outbreak at the Waterloo facility," she wrote.

Merschbrock, who had been with Tyson for a decade, said managers were given the "impossible task" of maintaining production while implementing virus safety precautions. They had been working 12-hour days, six or seven days a week, he said.

The office pool involved roughly $50 cash, which went to the person who picked the right percentage of workers who'd test positive for the deadly virus, according to Merschbrock. Those who took part didn't believe it violated company policy and also believed the plant's positivity rate would be lower than the community rate due to their mitigation efforts.

"It was a group of exhausted supervisors that had worked so hard and so smart to solve many unsolvable problems," Merschbrock said. "It was simply something fun, kind of a morale boost for having put forth an incredible effort. There was never any malicious intent. It was never meant to disparage anyone."

A Tyson spokesman declined to comment on Merschbrock's assertions.

Mel Orchard, a lawyer representing families of deceased workers, told the AP that Tyson's corporate culture prioritized production and sales over the health of its workers.

"Listening to the stories of those who lost a father, brother or wife, I have a hard time having sympathy for the managers who worked extra hours and were tired," he told the wire service. "But I do understand why and how this could have happened."

Orchard represents the estates of Sedika Buljic, 58; Reberiano Garcia, 60; Jose Ayala Jr., 44; and Isidro Fernandez, age unknown. Buljic, Garcia and Fernandez died in April, and Ayala on May 25 after a six-week hospitalization.

A tribute to Lorraine Treanor, Washington theater's booster-in-chief - DC Metro Theater Arts

By Susan Galbraith

In June 2005 Lorraine Treanor, a relatively new theater-maker transplant from Chicago, who had followed her husband’s work to settle in the Greater Washington area, joined with Walter “Ronnie” Ruff to launch DC Theatre Scene (DCTS). Their goal: to bring greater attention to theater and in particular media coverage, critical lifeblood to the smaller theater companies. By the end of 2006, Lorraine was at the helm of a worthy enterprise and in 2007 DC Theatre Scene was fully incorporated.

It is in no small part due to her enthusiasm for all things theatrical that Washington has grown into the U.S. city, second only to New York, with the highest number of theater productions each year.

Lorraine Treanor in her office with Elaine Stritch, June 2020. Photo courtesy of DC Theatre Scene.

Under Lorraine’s leadership DC Theatre Scene’s coverage expanded to Northern Virginia, Annapolis, and Baltimore. She had a “field hand” or two to contribute write-ups for what was theatrically of interest in New York City and became a champion of special festivals, including Spoleto in Charleston and Glimmerglass in Upstate New York.

Lorraine imagined, designed, and managed a site that went beyond reviews of individual shows and included news, features on special artists by experts in the field, and opinion columns. She expanded DCTS theater coverage to include opera, dance, and then film.

DCTS offered the most comprehensive professional theater listings, and DCTS became the “go-to” place for people to find weekend entertainment. Lorraine also personalized the service. Many a time she would be on the phone with a potential theater customer to help find the right show for the family’s needs. She seemed endlessly resourceful and had great personal knowledge about what each theater company offered the novice theatergoer or out-of-towner.

This editor-in-chief demanded a lot of her stable of writers. She had no compunctions about telling someone that a piece went too far, was sloppily put together, or — Lord forbid — it went “too easy” on a production. She demanded rigor in the writing and always urged that DCTS writers respect the field of theater criticism and see ourselves as professionals. “That’s why your name goes at the end of a review. You give credit to everyone that worked on the production and you recognize you are also part of it. You are putting the final point to a show, and that last period says it.”

She felt that an important part of her job was mentoring young writers. When Lorraine took on covering the DC Fringe Festival in the summers, her work clearly doubled. But she thought it was important to seed new artists and theater experiments. She also thought it was a way to bring new young blood into the field of theater criticism. It was a learning experience with thrills and spills along the way, but at the annual pizza party for all the “fringers,” she sat and beamed at the happy gathering and all the achievements.

One of the most thoughtful and original accomplishments that Lorraine shared with husband Tim Treanor was the establishment of the Maker Awards. Partnering with a local theater, she and Tim made a special event of it mid-season to recognize an audience member who exemplified the passion and loyalty of a truly committed theatergoer. Winners included David Tannous (2011), Tom Holzman and Alison Drucker (2012), Linda Elyse Bryce (2013, deceased), Barbara Bear (2014), David S. Kessler (2015), Linda Carr (2016), Joel Markowitz (2017, deceased), and Alan Friedman (deceased) and Louis Altarescu (both 2019).

Even when advertising began drying up and when the tasks and coverage seemed ever increasing but with fewer resources to manage them, Lorraine worked hard to compensate writers. When COVID arrived earlier this year and the community as well as the theaters shut down and all advertising budgets dried, Lorraine pivoted as we all did and scoured the internet for worthy things to cover and encouraged us to expand our vision of performance. She never lost her zest and hope that the next best thing would be out there — and she kept us all keeping on.

Lorraine has just announced her well-deserved retirement and the shutting down of DC Theatre Scene. It’s hard to imagine how (or who) could follow her classy act.

She’s our Lorraine — and the best thing that’s been in DC theater.

If only her beloved Elaine Stritch were here, glass in hand, to bray — but we’ll have to do, along with husband Tim, who still refers to her as “My Bride”:

Everybody rise!
Rise!
Rise! Rise! Rise! Rise! Rise! Rise! Rise!
Rise!

Susan Galbraith received a BA in English and Drama from Tufts University, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Settling in Minneapolis for a time, she earned an MFA from the University of Minnesota, founded a theater company, Performers Ensemble, and also collaborated with Prince on writing songs and the first draft of Purple Rain. Susan moved to Boston where she was part of Boston Shakespeare Company’s acting company under Peter Sellars. Since 1991, she has made DC her home, where she has enjoyed the opportunity to write plays, direct, act, and produce. She helped co-found Alliance for New Music-Theatre and collaborated on original works across disciplines, styles, and cultural expressions of music-theatee. For the Alliance, Susan co-wrote and directed Sandaya: Burmese Lessons and has collaborated with the Czech Embassy on several works inspired by great Czech writers, including Vanek Unleased and an adaptation of Kafka’s Metamorphosis. She has collaborated with composer Maurice Saylor on adapting Karel Capek’s R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) as a retro-futuristic cabaret musical, and, with composers Dawn Avery and Milad Yousofi and co-writer Yalda Baktash, has developed Troy/Voices from Afghanistan, a music-theater work featuring the stories of Afghan women and American female veterans. She is grateful to Lorraine Treanor and the opportunity of DC Theatre Scene to jump into the privileged audience seat from time to time to learn from and be inspired by her colleagues making theater and opera in the Greater Washington area.
