Principal's allegations could have landed band boosters in jail - WTVY

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -Dothan High School's principal told police that nearly $100,000 worth of equipment has been stolen from the school. That claim could have landed band boosters in jail.

Instead, those allegations likely only deepened a rift between boosters and school administrators.

Principal Bill Singleton, in the report dated July 30, told police two concession trailers worth $80,000 combined value had been removed from the campus without the school's permission. Also taken, he said, were a copy machine, lawn mower, cookware, and two utility trailers.

He estimated the value of all items at $92,000.

Singleton also told police those items had been stolen by band boosters. Those boosters have been feuding with administrators over new guidelines that give Dothan City Schools more control over volunteer, school-related organizations.

Based upon Singleton's statement, investigators questioned Wolfpack Band Booster President Dedra Garry. Afterwards, they determined that no crime had been committed.

When contacted by WTVY, Garry referred questions to her attorney, Peter McInish. He claims equipment taken from Dothan High is owned by the booster club. “They have paperwork to prove ownership,” he said.

Though police consider the matter closed, Superintendent Dr. Phyllis Edwards is threatening to sue boosters if the equipment isn't returned.

In a statement, she also referred the group’s officers as “former” leaders, a hint that she may no longer recognize an affiliation between boosters and school.

A request seeking comment from Singleton has not been answered.

The concession trailers had been used by the city’s two high schools at fundraisers, including the National Peanut Festival.

On the recommendation of Edwards, those two school combined campuses last year.
