Sand Bar Ferry Bridge didn’t hold on to Moody name.
SEPT. 20, 1965
Georgia Gov. Carl Sanders declared Sept. 20, 1965, Lester S. Moody Bridge Day.
The Moody Bridge was built to replace the older, two-lane Sand Bar Ferry Bridge, which had linked Georgia and South Carolina since the 1920s.
Early in construction, it was decided that the bridge would honor Moody, the Chamber of Commerce executive most Augustans credited with bringing Fort Gordon, the Savannah River Plant, the Clark Hill Dam (and lake) and many, many industries to this region.
Still, it took them almost three more years to finish the bridge, and a companion span for opposite traffic didn’t open until the early 1990s. The curious thing was what happened with the bridge’s name.
After Lester Moody died in late December 1972 with all the praise his life had earned, people quit linking his name to the bridge. Everyone stopped calling it the "Lester Moody Bridge" and went back to calling it the "Sand Bar Ferry Bridge."
