PHOTOS: Brethren Boosters hosts first trunk or treat event Saturday - Manistee News Advocate

BRETHREN — The Halloween Trunk or Treat Brethren Boosters event brought families dressed for the holiday to snag bundles of candy from community members who were stationed apart but still festive on Saturday.

Ashley Gutowski, Boosters treasurer, was on site handing out candy at the Dickson Township Park and said this was the first time the boosters has hosted a trunk or treat.

“We wanted to do it to bring some fun and joy to the kids in this world where they’ve been stuck at home and have not had the social (time available) that they would like to have, and this gives them the chance to come out while still being safe and have fun,” she said.

She said the event had great turnout and the event had quite a few donations.

“We had candy donations from Little River Casino, and also bag donations in case anybody needed them for trick or treating. And then we had a monetary donation from Bulletin Board News for the candy, and also of course the Brethren Boosters donated the majority of the candy,” she said.

Joe Gutowski, Boosters president, said there were a few thousand Dum Dum suckers, a few thousand Tootsie Rolls, drawstring backpacks for collecting candy and more at the event.

A half hour into the event, at least 110 bags of candy that had been prebagged were distributed.

He said the boosters had talked about hosting a trunk or treat the last few years.

“Most of the local community goes into Manistee or Onekama where there’s a more dense population in a small area,” he said.

The event was held from noon to 2 p.m., leaving plenty of time for trick or treat fans to also go to other events.

Ashley Gutowski said they wanted to host it somewhere that would be safe and fun for the kids to go to where they could attend early enough in the day and still be able to enjoy Halloween later with their families.

“But this would give them the opportunity to stay local, and (socially) distance a little bit more,” she said.

This was also the debut Halloween event for the newly formed Brethren Boosters Junior group which featured a group of students handing out candy to trunk or treaters on site.

Mike Ruman, owner of Traks Bar & Grill, in Brethren, said the turnout was great from the start.

Ruman said he was running out of candy at about 12:50 p.m. and he came to the event with roughly 50 pounds of treats.

He said he was glad to help with the event, “I’m part of the community,” he said before a group of children stopped at his truck asking for treats.
