LOUISVILLE, Ky. (February 16, 2021) – Today Dr. Sarah Moyer, Chief Health Strategist and the Director of the Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness, provided an update on the mass vaccination operations at the LouVax site at Broadbent Arena and the status of COVID-19 in the city.
After operations at LouVax were shut down due to the winter storm, the health department announced that the site will reopen at 9 a.m. tomorrow. The deferred start time will allow for proper snow plowing and salting in the parking lots to ensure the safety of staff, volunteers and people being vaccinated.
Mayor Fischer praised the LouVax team for its efforts to reschedule appointments
“Our LouVax team has been a model of efficiency and a great example around the country for mass vaccinations,” the Mayor said. “We’ll figure it out and work extra hours for the folks that had to cancel because of bad weather.”
LouVax Schedule of Operations for the Week
- Wednesday, February 17, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Thursday, February 18, a decision will be made by 6 a.m. Thursday morning
- Friday, February 19, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Saturday, February 20, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. (One-time only event for second-dose shots)
Dr. Moyer said that Saturday, the LouVax site is scheduled to open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and is a one-time event to accommodate individuals who need their required second-dose shots.
For those concerned about getting their second doses on time, Dr. Moyer reassured them they would not be affected by the delays. Per guidance from the Centers for Disease Control, 28 days is the recommended interval for the booster shot. While getting the second shot as close to the recommended three-week or one-month interval is encouraged, there is no maximum interval between first and second doses for either vaccine, she said.
“We can give it up to four days earlier and up to day 42 or six weeks after the first shot. You’ll be perfectly fine if your second shot is delayed by a couple of days or weeks. The doses are being reserved for you,” Dr. Moyer said. “We will get you the vaccine as soon as it’s safe to do so.”
Here are the key COVID-19 data metrics for the week of February 16, 2021:
- There were 2,130 new cases over the previous week.
- Hospitalization data:
- 12.5% of patients currently hospitalized have COVID-19.
- 58 patients in ICU with COVID-19 as of February 16, a decrease from 74 the week prior.
- 39 COVID-19 patients on ventilators as of February 16, compared to 49 last week.
- COVID-19 cases remain in every ZIP code
- 142,812 total vaccine doses given since December in Metro Louisville
- 12.2% of Louisville residents have received at least one dose of vaccine and 4.6% have completed the vaccine series
COVID-19 cases continue to trend downward as Louisville reported its lowest weekly case count since October. While encouraging, Dr. Moyer said that the city is still in the red with several cases, deaths and incidence rate, and COVID-19 continues to be the number one health threat across the city.
Dr. Moyer said that residents should get tested if they are out in public, going to the store or in the workplace. She said that getting tested helps to identify new cases and track the spread of infection in Louisville.
"We want to make sure that you're able to quarantine, keep your family and community members safe and that you have the proper treatment to prevent serious illness or hospitalizations from COVID," Dr. Moyer said.
First Responder Data
Currently, 41 members of LMPD, Louisville Fire, Metro EMS, Metro Corrections and the Sheriff’s Office are off-duty due to COVID-19:
- 21 are off with positive tests and in self-isolation
- 9 are off and quarantined due to exposure to someone who tested positive
- 11 are off with symptoms, pending test results
Positive test numbers for first responders/public safety since the incident began:
- 543 positive tests
- 522 have fully recovered and returned to duty
Metro Corrections inmate data:
Total Tested: 5,983
Total Positive: 395
Total Recovered: 384
Total currently under medical isolation: 11
Total tests pending: 0
