Booster shots could be the future for the COVID vaccine - WSIL TV

MOUNT VERNON (WSIL)-- Mount Vernon's vaccination clinic kept a steady stream of people walking in the door Friday.

Many were excited to receive a vaccine, with some still trying to receive a Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

"We actually have a lot of people that have been following the Johnson and Johnson story, and are asking if they can still get it if they sign a waiver or what-not," said Regional Coordinating Hospital Manager, Arien Herrmann.

The clinic only offered the Pfizer vaccine, who's CEO said booster shots may become necessary in the near future.

Herrmann agreed that with variants of the COVID-19 virus, a booster shot could be the next step in vaccination.

"So if we keep continuing to have mutations within the virus, that could lead to us needing boosters, but for me, that just means that we need to get everybody vaccinated in order to prevent these mutations in the future," said Herrmann.

Herrmann doesn't only believe other people should get boosters, he would get one himself.

"I would not hesitate to get a booster. We get a booster shot for so many other things. We get our annual flu vaccinations. So I would get a booster shot if that was required," Herrmann said.

Veteran Richard Clark said that he would get a booster, because getting the vaccine means protecting other people.

"It's like protection. So if you go down range, you always want to have your weapon with you. So the vaccine is like your weapon. And I want to feel safe and live longer," said Clark.

Pfizer's CEO said that a third COVID vaccine dose will likely be needed within 12 months of being fully vaccinated, and we could see people needing to get vaccinated annually.
